Websites for small businesses

Example responsive business website shown on laptop and mobile devices.
Example website concept

A professional website should make it immediately clear what you do, who you help and how someone can take the next step.

The Business Workshop designs and refreshes straightforward, professional websites for small businesses that need to look credible, work properly on mobile and generate enquiries. No unnecessary complexity. Just a clear website built around your business and your customers.

A different way to look at your website

A website is part of the business process

If a potential customer lands on your website and can't quickly understand what you do, trust your business or easily get in touch, that isn't just a design problem. It's a customer-journey problem, and it costs you enquiries.

That's why every website starts with how your business works and what your customers need to know, not with colours and fonts.

What a website refresh can change

Clearer wording, simpler navigation and obvious ways to get in touch make it easier for customers to understand what you do and take the next step.

How it works

The same practical approach as the rest of The Business Workshop: review, improve, then look after it.

  1. 1. Website MOT

A practical review of your current site, with a clear list of what to improve.

  2. 2. Refresh or new website

Improve what you have, or build a new site around your business and your customers.

  3. 3. Website Care

Optional monthly support to keep your site accurate, working and up to date.

Website design process

Four-step website design process: review, plan, build and launch.

Every project follows the same four steps, whether it's a refresh or a new website. You approve the page plan before building starts, and you review the finished site before it goes live.

Website MOT

Not sure whether your website needs rebuilding? Start here. I review your current site from a business and customer perspective, and you receive a practical list of recommendations.

£95 to £149

Depending on the size of the site. If you go on to a refresh or new website, the Website MOT fee may be deducted from the project price.

What's reviewed

  • What is clear
  • What is confusing
  • Where trust may be weak
  • Where enquiries may be getting lost
  • How easy it is to navigate
  • How well it works on mobile
  • Whether the calls to action are strong enough
  • Whether the customer journey makes sense

This isn't a technical code audit. It's a practical review of how well your website supports your business.

How website projects work

  • Agreed scope. Every project has a written scope before work begins, covering pages, features, who provides the wording and images, and what's excluded.
  • Two rounds of revisions are included. Further changes can be quoted separately.
  • Staged payments. Usually a 50% deposit to book and start, with the balance due before launch.
  • Third-party costs set out clearly. Domain names, hosting, business email or paid tools are listed in your quote, never hidden.

What affects the price

  • Number of pages
  • Complexity and features
  • How much writing and design work is needed
  • The condition of your existing website
  • Any integrations with other tools

Timescales

Most small-business websites are completed within approximately two to four weeks once all the content, approvals and access have been supplied. Delays in supplying content, images, approvals or domain access can extend this.

What I'll need from you

  • Your logo and brand colours
  • Photos of your work, team or premises
  • Details of your services
  • Testimonials and accreditations, if you have them
  • Access to your domain and any existing website

Best suited to

Brochure-style websites of around five to ten pages for service businesses, trades, construction, kitchens and bathrooms, property services, consultants and other owner-managed businesses.

Online shops, membership sites, customer portals and bespoke booking systems aren't offered as standard at the moment.

Website FAQs

Can you refresh my website without moving it?

Sometimes. If your site is on Wix, WordPress, Squarespace or another platform, a refresh may mean updating it where it is, or rebuilding it elsewhere if that makes more sense. We'll agree which approach fits before I quote, so there are no surprises.

Will I be able to edit the website myself?

It depends on how the site is built. Simple, fast brochure websites suit businesses that don't need to change their content often, and updates can be handled through Website Care. If you need to edit pages regularly yourself, a different platform may suit you better, and I'll say so at the start.

Do you guarantee a first-page Google ranking?

No. Nobody can honestly guarantee rankings. Every website includes the basics that help search engines understand your business: clear page titles and descriptions, sensible headings, readable web addresses, a sitemap and Google Search Console setup. Ongoing SEO work can be quoted separately if you need it.

Are there any ongoing costs?

Usually a few, and they're always set out in your quote. Typical third-party costs include your domain name, any hosting, business email and any paid tools or stock photos. Website Care is optional.

Can you write the wording for my website?

Yes. I can rewrite your existing wording or write new copy for your homepage, services, about page, FAQs and contact page. Your quote will say clearly whether copywriting is included.

Can you build an online shop or booking system?

Not as a standard service at the moment. The focus is clear, professional brochure websites that generate enquiries. If you need an online shop, memberships or bespoke booking, I'm happy to talk it through, but another provider or platform may suit you better.

Getting enquiries but they aren't being followed up? That's a process problem, not a website one. Explore the Business MOT
